TitleBeral, Valerie: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationValerie Beral has conducted epidemiological research for 30 years and obtained results that, inter alia have led to the discovery of some causes of cancer and clarified the role of hormonal factors in breast cancer. Her work suggested that both cervical cancer and Kaposi's sarcoma were infectious diseases spread by sexual activity, before the relevant viruses were identified, and the findings of the Collaborative Group, which she instigated, organized, and reported, ended controversy over the effects on breast cancer of oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, breast feeding, and alcohol and quantified the implications of different family histories.
