Citation | Parker is distinguished for his major contributions to our understanding of the enzymology of signal transduction cascades involving protein and lipid kinases which link changes in extra cellular events to alterations in cellular behaviour. He was first to purify, clone and characterise protein kinase C and show that it was a tumour promoter receptor and he then carried out a comprehensive structure-function analysis of the large PKC gene family. He has made major contributions to knowledge of phosphoinositides second messengers. His molecular biochemical studies of phospholipases, phosphoinositide 3 kinases and 5 phosphatases have helped reveal the central role of PKC and of PI signals in cellular growth regulation, differentiation and cancer. |
