Citation | His studies of visual pathways reveal basic organizational patterns of adult neocortex, and show that adaptive, developmental changes can be produced by activity or by formation of novel cerebral connections. He has demonstrated cellular mechanisms that underlie formation of layer-specific connectivity patterns in the visual thalamus; has shown the circuits that produce orientation selectivity in visual cortex, and has demonstrated the parts of these circuits that are particularly susceptible to adaptive changes. He has shown that when visual inputs are redirected to auditory cortex, cortical connections characteristic of visual circuits form, and these new circuits can mediate visual behaviour. |
