CitationFor outstanding contributions towards an understanding of the pathogenesis, treatment and control of tropical diseases. As Director of the Wellcome Trust Units in S E Asia, White has overseen laboratory and clinical research that has led to the introduction of more effective treatment of malaria, typhoid, melioidosis, diphtheria and dengue.
Particularly notable was the introduction of artemisinin and its derivatives, in combination therapy for malaria. This work has had a dramatic influence on the development of global strategies, endorsed by the WHO, for the control and treatment of this disease.
