Title | Arrow, Kenneth Joseph: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Kenneth J Arrow has made ground breaking contributions to an unusually large number of fields of inquiry: the theory of democracy (items 1, 3, 18 on the list of his 20 most significant publications); foundations and applications of risk analysis (2, 5, 6, 7, 16); the economics of information (13, 15, 17); the theory of general economic equilibrium (8, 9); the economics of health (4, 13, 14); technological change as an economic phenomenon (11, 12); and environmental economics (16, 19, 20). The depth, breadth and influence of his work on modern social science thinking has been so enormous that he was not only awarded one of the earliest Nobel Memorial Prizes in Economic Science (1972) - to date he remains the youngest economist to have won the prize - but, on the basis of a poll conducted in 1999 among European economists, he was also judged to have been the most original economist of the twentieth century. |
