Citation | Roger Tsien has made unique methodological contributions in biomolecular engineering and signal transduction. Tsien invented molecular probes that allow cell biologists to measure and spatially resolve calcium, cAMP and nitric oxide in living cells. He also perfected the usefulness of Green and Red Fluorescent Proteins, macromolecules that enable visible fluorescence to be encoded genetically. His creative use of these reagents has revolutionized our understanding of the spatiotemporal action of signalling molecules. Professor Tsien is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of the Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics and the Wolf Prize in Medicine. |
