TitleBruce, Peter George: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationPeter Bruce is distinguished for his achievements in the understanding of ionically conducting solids and their exploitation as components in rechargeable batteries and fuel cells. Building on a new method he devised for determining structures ab initio from powder diffraction, he showed that, contrary to what had been believed for many years, crystalline polymer electrolytes actually conduct better than amorphous ones. He has also used solid state chemical principles to develop a route to layered LiMnO2 and non-stoichiometric derivations which far exceed performance of existing materials as the positive electrode in lithium batteries. This work has now been licensed for commercialisation in Europe, USA and Japan.
