Citation | Professor Higham is distinguished for his research on numerical linear algebra. His studies of the effects of both perturbations to data and finite precision arithmetic are fundamental to the success of very large matrix calculations, so have influenced strongly the development of much software, including LAPACK and MATLAB. His work on functions of matrices has advanced knowledge of the preservation of group properties, and has provided excellent algorithms for computing matrix logarithms and exponentials. He is also a leading expert on matrix nearness problems, including the identification of nearest correlation matrices in financial applications. His monograph "Accuracy and Stability of Numerical Algorithms" (SIAM, 1996) is of great value to much current research. |
