CitationDistinguished for his seminal contributions to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. His invention of composite radiofrequency pulses led directly to radically new methods for broadband decoupling in high-resolution NMR. He introduced the concepts of spin topology filtration and recoupling of dipolar interactions in solids, and showed how nuclear spin-state lifetimes can be extended beyond the normally accepted "T1" limit. Recently, his novel idea of designing radiofrequency pulse sequences based on the symmetry of transformations of space, spin, and field interactions promises to have wide implications. His monograph "Spin Dynamics. Basics of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance" (Wiley, 2001) has been most influential.
