TitleMair, Robert James: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationRobert Mair is distinguished for his pioneering work on the development and application of soil mechanics theory and the latest laboratory and field research to the practice of geotechnical engineering and underground construction, particularly in relation to tunnelling in soft ground. He has led many of the latest research initiatives, and has applied these to major construction projects, very often in an innovative way. The successful construction of many of the tunnels in London and elsewhere in the world in recent years without significant damage to overlying buildings owes much to the knowledge and understanding provided by Mair's work together with his engineering leadership.
