TitlePope, Stephen Bailey: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationProfessor Pope has made outstanding contributions to many aspects of turbulent flows, from physical models to efficient numerical algorithms. His "intrinsic low-dimensional manifolds" (with Maas) was a major advance in dimension-reduction methodologies for combustion chemistry; his "in-situ adaptive tabulation" algorithm produced huge improvements in computational efficiency, enabling realistic combustion chemistry to be applied to complex problems; and his pioneering contributions to pdf methods produced a much followed approach to turbulent combustion. Through imaginative analysis and novel direct numerical simulations, he elucidated fundamental processes in turbulence, including surface bending and stretching, and the subtle behaviour of Lagrangian time series. Widely admired for his innovation and rigour, he has brought fundamentals to practical application in major industries.
