Citation | David Wark is an internationally renowned authority on neutrino physics. He has worked on a series of groundbreaking neutrino experiments, including SAGE, the solar neutrino experiment, which first showed that there was a deficit of neutrinos from the pp solar cycle and more recently on the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory in Canada, where he became co-spokesman. The results from this experiment have provided clear proof that the electron neutrino has mass and that there is a large mixing angle between the first and second neutrino types. This is an extremely important result and Wark's role was pivotal in extracting the signal from the data and in obtaining the neutral to charged current ratio. He is an excellent speaker, much in demand by his colleagues, schools and by the media. He was awarded the IOP Rutherford Prize in 2004. |
