CitationStanley Falkow carried out pioneering studies on drug resistance plasmids and transposition in the 1960s and 1970s, and was the first to use molecular techniques to explore how bacterial pathogens cause disease. Falkow is universally credited with merging the fields of host cell biology and microbial pathogenesis, founding the new field of cellular microbiology, and has trained many of the best investigators in the field of microbial pathogenesis. If there is one individual who can be said to have shaped the field of bacterial pathogenesis into the vibrant field it is today, it is Stan Falkow.
