Citation | Armstrong is distinguished for his development of a novel electrochemical technique, protein film voltammetry, enabling the electron transfer properties of co-factors in proteins to be observed directly in the potential and time domains. Thus he has, with great skill and elegance, been able to follow quantitatively delicate mechanisms of proton and metal ion exchange at iron sulfur clusters in proteins and to detect gated electron transfer and unusual diode-like behaviour in multi-centred metallo enzymes. Recently, he has determined, in molecular detail, the mechanism of proton-electron coupling in a protein, a process central to bioenergetics. |
