Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz is most distinguished for bridging the vital interfaace between clinical medicine and clinically related basic research. His own studies have led the way in furthering our understanding of cell mediated immune responses in persistent viral infections working closely with cytomegalovirus and oncogenic papilloma viruses. This work led directly to the develpment of an immunotherapeutic vaccine, which is presently in clinical trial targeted against cervical cancer. Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz has also been very prominent in creating and fostering opportunities for biomedical research activities both at Cardiff and now as Principal of the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London.

He has shown outstanding leadership in creating and fostering new opportunities for biomedical research first at Cardiff and now as Deputy Rector of Imperial College London. His earlier scientific studies have greatly contributed to our understanding of cell-mediated immune responses in persistent human virus infections, mainly cytomegalo virus and oncogenic papilloma virus.
