TitleSolomon, Susan: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date15 May 2008
DescriptionCertificate of Candidate for Election to the Foreign Membership
CitationSusan Solomon's pioneereing research helped explain the cause of the ozone 'hole' . Solomon led two expeditions to the Antarctic, confirming that human use of chlorofluorocarbons played the key role in depleting the ozone layer.

Solomon has also shaped the theoretical understanding of the detailed chemistry responsible for stratospheric ozone destruction. She demonstrated the important chemical effects of surface processes on polar stratospheric clouds and on volcanic debris. Further, she is one of the leading researchers involved in evaluating the impact of newly proposed substitutes for the now-banned ozone-depleting chemicals.

She has played a key role in international assessments of climate change and was Chair of Working Group 1 for the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report.
