TitleAinsworth, Robert Anthony: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date14 May 2009
DescriptionBob Ainsworth is distinguished for outstanding research in structural integrity, and for applying this to methods now used worldwide for assessing the safety of nuclear power generation plants and other structures. His work on the effects of cyclic loading in the creep range led to assessment methods for high temperatures (R5 procedure). Using a reference stress approach and the effects of plasticity on J integral values, he provided theoretical underpinning of the failure assessment diagram (FAD) used for fracture/plastic collapse assessments (R6 procedure). He has made significant contributions on the influence of constraint and residual stresses on structural integrity.
