TitleBatty, Michael: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date14 May 2009
CitationMichael Batty contributed significantly to the mathematical modelling of cities in the 1970s. He showed how to handle space for model calibration through the concept of spatial entropy. He has demonstrated the importance of scaling relationships in urban modelling and related these to fractal geometry in urban morphology, building on random growth theories in statistical physics. In the last fifteen years, he has extended these ideas and pioneered agent-based cellular automata models. In all his work, he has connected to important issues in urban planning and design. He was elected as FBA in 2001 and made CBE in 2004.
