TitleMcDonald, Arthur Bruce: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date14 May 2009
DescriptionArthur McDonald is distinguished for his outstanding research in nuclear structure physics, into the charge symmetry of nuclear forces and the influence of the weak interaction on quark interactions. His research has culminated recently in the successful operation of the underground Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO, a joint UK, USA and Canadian project) of which he is the Director. At that laboratory the solution of the solar neutrino problem has demonstrated that the electron neutrino has mass, and mixes with the other two neutrino types and also that our understanding of the energy generating mechanism of the sun is on a firm foundation. The recent first observation of the day-night effect on the solar neutrino flux at SNO is just a foretaste of the seminal work to come during the next decade.
