TitleKailath, Thomas: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date14 May 2009
DescriptionCertificate of Candidate for Election to the Foreign Membership
CitationKailath has gained world-wide recognition in several widely different fields-information and communication theory; linear systems, estimation and control; signal processing ; linear algebra and matrix theory; statistics and probability. Examples include a striking capacity-achieving algorithm for channels with feedback; innovations processes and martingale theory; the structure of likelihood ratios for signal detection; high-resolution direction-finding algorithms; the concept of displacement structure and its many applications; and resolution-enhancement techniques in optical lithography. He has written classic textbooks, mentored a hundred doctoral and post-doctoral scholars, and made several successful transitions of his ideas through companies founded by, and co-founded with, his students.

Citation provided on Election Certificate:
Tom Kailath is internationally renowned for his many seminal contributions in the area of linear systems theory with application, for example to automatic control, multiple sensor signal processing and optical lithography for the semiconductor industry. An important example was his dievelopment of displacement rank as a fundamental technique for representing and exploiting the special structure inherent to a wide range of problems in mathematics and engineering. His insight led to a range of more efficient computational algorithms which are widely used in key applications today. Remarkably, Kailath appears in the ISI list of Highly Cited Authors in both the Engineering and Mathematics categories. He has not only made a deep contribution in his chosen technical fields but also had a major impact on industry, his academic discipline, and the educations of future leaders.
