Foo Yew (Eddy) Liew is distinguished for his work on the role of nitric oxide (NO) and cytokines in immune regulation. He was the first to show that NO is an effector molecule in killing intracellular pathogens. He further demonstrated that NO regulates the differentiation and functions of various subsets of CD4+ T cells and hence plays a pivotal role in immune homeostasis. He also demonstrated the key roles of interleukin (IL)-15, IL-18 and IL-33 in inflammatory disease. Together these findings have had a major impact on our understanding of the balance of host-defence against pathogens and avoidance of immunopathy.
