McDougall is known around the world for defining the "neutral density surfaces" along which the energetic mesoscale eddies mix, the many mixing processes in the ocean that are caused by the nonlinear nature of the equation of state of seawater, the way in which mesoscale mixing processes should be represented in ocean models (the Temporal-Residual-Mean velocity), and the accurate treatment of "heat" in the ocean component of the climate system. He is the leading figure in the thermodynamics of seawater.
