Professor of Systems Biology at the University of Edinburgh, established the circadian clock of Arabidopsis thaliana as a model to study dynamic biological regulation. He developed reporter gene imaging of living plants to identify the first plant clock genes, and integrated disparate molecular results in the first mathematical models of the plant clock mechanism. The models revealed general operating principles, such as the flexible regulation of complex feedback circuits. His work on the alga Ostreococcus tauri identified a non-transcriptional circadian clock that is shared across the eukaryotes, overturning the central paradigm of circadian biology.
