Michael Petrides is an outstanding cognitive neuroscientist who has made seminal empirical and theoretical contributions to our understanding of the structure and functions of the frontal lobes. He has been a pioneer of cross-species studies in humans and monkeys, and most uniquely has combined anatomical, lesion and functional neuroimaging methods to address fundamental issues of structure, function and homology, leading to an influential model of the anatomo-functional organization of the lateral frontal cortex. His recent discovery of a cytoarchitectonic homologue of Broca's language area in monkey is having a major impact on conceptions of language circuitry and its evolution.
