Citation | Courtauld Professor of Biochemistry, Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology, University College London and Birkbeck College Gabriel Waksman is an internationally recognized structural biologist and biochemist who has made important contributions to our understanding of the structure and function of secretion machines spanning the entire cell envelope, and has elucidated mechanisms of transport across membranes through protein channels. In particular he has provided profound insights into pilus biogenesis and type IV secretion in Gram-negative bacteria, combining structural and biochemical/biophysical techniques to provide a detailed understanding of the molecular events taking place during secretion by these systems. His seminal contributions have assisted development of novel antimicrobials targeting the secretion process.
