Ralph Cicerone has recently been appointed to a second six-year term as President of that National Academy of Sciences. He came to this post after a distinguished research record in atmospheric chemistry, having entered this field after starting his academic career in engineering. He held senior academic posts at NCAR in Bolder and at the Scripps Institute in La Jolla before moving to UC Irvine, where he served as professor in the Department of Earth System Science and the Chemistry Department before becoming Chancellor - a post he held until taking up his post at the National Academy in 2005. He has sustained a record of involvement in policy issues related to climate, energy and environment. He has proved influential and effective internationally, through the IAC, IAP and other bodies, as well as with the US. Under his leadership, the links between the Royal Society and the NAS have strengthened, to mutual benefit.
