CitationZhu CHEN has made important contributions to the treatment of leukemia, both in the understanding of novel drug actions and their translation to clinical use. He pioneered the concept of synergistic cancer targeting therapy and provided the first successful model in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) using all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and arsenic trioxide (As2O3). Through in vitro studies of the mechanism of these drugs on leukemia cells, he provided a rational approach to their action in inducing leukemia cell differentiation and destruction. His contributions have turned this most fatal hematological malignancy to a curable disease
