TitleStern, Nicholas: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date30 April 2014
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationPresident of the British Academy, IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government, London School of Economics; Director of the India Observatory, Chairman of the Grantham Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, Chairman of the Asia Research Centre

Lord Stern is of course known to the general public for the path-breaking work he did which challenged the world view on the economics of climate change. However, this achievement is to underestimate what has been a distinguished career within mathematical economics. With a background in mathematics, he has made major contributions to a plethora of important problems in economic theory and in the application of economics. His involvement both within industry and government, and the positions he has held, make this level of eminence clear.
