Citation | Sir Rory Collins, BHF Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology, Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford
Rory Collins created and led large studies that transformed statins from esoteric drugs for familial hypercholesterolaemia into safe, widely-used generics that annually prevent millions of heart attacks and ischaemic strokes. His large placebo-controlled trials and worldwide Cholesterol Treatment Trialists' meta-analyses confirmed heart attack reduction, discovered stroke reduction, and demonstrated safety (RR=1 for non-vascular deaths in the randomised trials) and efficacy in many different types of patient. Remarkably, his CTT still gets all rival trials periodically to share their detailed datasets with him; comparing different regimens, benefit is proportional to cholesterol reduction from top to bottom of the 'normal' cholesterol range.
