Z.P. Bažant discovered the scaling law for the energetic size effect in quasibrittle structural failure bridging ductility and brittleness, verified it experimentally for many important materials, showed its use for measuring fracture characteristics, and conceived the crack-band and nonlocal models now widely used in industry and commercial programmes to analyse quasibrittle structural failure. His groundbreaking results on scaling, concrete creep and hygrothermal effects, nano- and micro-mechanics of inelastic behaviour, fracture mechanics, structural stability and probabilistic mechanics have been widely followed and applied. He has received prestigious medals, seven honorary doctorates, and is one of the top-cited researcher in his field.
