TitleBayvel, Polina: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished by her creative research on novel optical communication networks, systems and associated wavelength-selective devices. She has established worldwide leadership in advancing the concept of wavelengthrouted optical networks. Comprehensive analysis, together with novel wavelength-routing algorithms, has led to the key understanding of such networks, including the measure of how many wavelengths are required for a given number of nodes, physical topology and throughput.
Professor Bayvel has also made major contributions to identifying optical fibre transmission limits and signal processing techniques for their mitigation in the linear and nonlinear regime. She has specifically demonstrated an approach to overcoming Kerr non-linearity - by multi wavelength digital back propagation. Through a series of elegant experiments she has established the applicability of new concepts which have been widely implemented in commercial systems
