TitleGai, Pratibha Laxman: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date28 April 2016
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationPratibha Gai is a recognised world leader in areas involving physics, chemistry and materials science through her innovative studies of dynamic atomic processes in reacting solids. She has pioneered novel in-situ electron microscopy approaches and has co-invented widely used, ground breaking environmental electron microscopy (ETEM) to directly observe and analyse with atomic resolution gas-solid chemical reactions. She has combined novel, correlative in-situ ETEM at individual atom sensitivity with defect dynamics, spectroscopy, chemical and functional studies of catalysts providing greater understanding of atomic processes during catalyst activation and deactivation. She has discovered new nanomaterials and processes for catalysis, piezoelectrics, energy storage, health care and nanocoatings. Her microscopy and process inventions are now exploited by microscope manufacturers and chemical companies with resulting applications of benefit to the public.
