Citation | Sriram Ramaswamy is a leading theoretical condensed matter physicist who has made broad-ranging contributions to nonequilibrium statistical physics. His insightful and pioneering work includes theories of order and fluctuations in thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystals, the glass transition, sedimenting suspensions and quasicrystals. His seminal prediction of instabilities in suspensions of swimming microorganisms driven by active stresses is one of the fundamental works defining the rapidly growing field of active matter. The applicability of these results to a wide range of biophysical systems, including the cellular cytoskeleton, has inspired innumerable experimental and theoretical advances. |
