TitleSeries, Caroline Mary: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date28 April 2016
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationCaroline Series is a world leader in low-dimensional hyperbolic geometry. Her seminal results about symbolic coding on hyperbolic surfaces uncovered deep links between geometric group theory and dynamical systems, foreshadowing automatic and Gromov-hyperbolic groups. Her theorem that the union of all simple geodesics has Hausdorff dimension one is fundamental.
She has created a highly original theory of pleating rays, enabling computation of deformation spaces of hyperbolic 3manifolds. Consequences include solutions to hitherto intractable classical discreteness problems, progress on key conjectures of Thurston and influential new connections to Teichmüller theory.
Her book `Indra's Pearls' is widely praised for its brilliant exposition.
