Citation | Professor Withers has made seminal contributions to our fundamental understanding of the performance of materials, often in operando under demanding conditions. He has pioneered the use of large-scale neutron and X-ray facilities to probe engineering materials behaviour. His advances in residual stresses mapping methods have underpinned the scientific basis by which we consider their influence on failure. He developed time-lapse X-ray Computed Tomography for 3D imaging of degradation across a range of timescales. Establishing correlative tomography linking together X-ray and electron imaging he has enabled the tracking of the same 3D region of interest from metre to the nanometres length-scale. |
