CitationRappuoli is distinguished for numerous outstanding contributions to medical science. His work has produced licensed vaccines against pertussis, three strains of meningococcus, pneumococcus, Haemophilus and pandemic influenza.
Rappuoli helped coin the term ‘Cellular Microbiology’ and lead the emerging field of bacterial/host cell interactions; he and his teams have made numerous fundamental discoveries in bacterial virulence mechanisms. He is famous for ‘Reverse Vaccinology’ - used to develop the recently licensed MenB vaccine. As an industry leader, he is unique in retaining very close ties with academia; Rappuoli has protected and advanced fundamental research in the vaccine industry throughout his career
