Title | Harland, Ricard Mark: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Richard Harland as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Harland developed methods in Xenopus to identify embryonic patterning genes by mRNA injection, visualize expression by in situ hybridization, and determine in vivo functions by gain and loss of function. He contributed to X.tropicalis and X. laevis genome assembly and exploitation, and developed X. tropicalis for genetics. He discovered that the BMP inhibitor Noggin, emitted by Spemann's organizer, controls early embryogenesis. Noggin also controls skeleton development. His group showed that Planar Cell Polarity coordinates gastrulation. Current work focuses on Fibroblast Growth Factor, Wnt, and BMP signalling in neural and neural crest differentiation, and biomechanics in placode formation. |
