Title | Scholes, Gregory Denton: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Gregory Scholes as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | For seminal contributions to the study of electronic energy transfer, particularly natural photosynthetic light harvesting. By combining creative theoretical approaches with incisive experiments Gregory Scholes has transformed our understanding of the captive and transport of excitation energy. His development of the Transition Density Cube Method enabled quantitative calculation of energy transfer in molecular complexes, while his formulation of Generalized Förster Theory enabled the definition of the key design principle of natural light harvesting: the use of delocalized electronic states. His experimental studies of electronic coherence and its biological role in photosynthetic marine algae influenced both biological and artificial photosynthetic studies. |
