CitationAkshay Venkatesh is one of the leading number theorists in the world. His works range from representation theory to the arithmetic and topology of locally symmetric spaces and homogeneous dynamics, and especially their applications to diophantine problems. His breakthroughs have led to the resolution of or advances on long standing problems, including Hilbert's 11- th problem on solving quadratic equations in integers in a number field, Cohen Lenstra heuristics for class groups of function fields, and the cohomology of arithmetic locally symmetric spaces of positive defect .His fundamental new insights connect these subjects in unexpected and decisive ways.
