TitleFuchs, Elaine: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date28 March 2019
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Elaine Fuchs as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Foreign Member and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationElaine Fuchs transformed our understanding of skin stem cells and their application to regenerative medicine, geneticsyndromes and cancers. On the cusp of recombinant-DNA, she began making groundbreaking molecular inroads into skin stem cells and their balance of growth and differentiation. In cloning skin proteins and elucidating how they protect progenitors from mechanical stress, Fuchs pioneered reverse genetics-starting with proteins and working to causative human disease-mutations. She systematically advanced these now-classic mouse genetic approaches in imaginative ways to beautifully dissect the signaling pathways and transcriptional controls that orchestrate how stem cells make and repair tissues, and go awry in malignancies.
