Title | Ahringer, Julie: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 21 April 2021 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Julie Ahringer as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Ahringer is distinguished for her ground-breaking contributions to molecular genetics. She carried out the first systematic inactivation of all the genes in any animal by creating the widely-used RNAi library for C. elegans, pioneering genome-wide RNAi screening, and transforming C. elegans research. Using this advance and others, Ahringer has made seminal contributions that illuminated our understanding of the processes underlying cell polarity and gene expression. This includes showing that spindle positioning is controlled by heterotrimeric G protein signalling, discovering a connection between chromatin marking and splicing, and revealing mechanisms and principles of genome organisation and gene expression regulation. |
