Date | 21 April 2021 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of William Bond as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | William Bond is the world's foremost authority on the origin, evolution and ecology of tropical open ecosystems (savannas and grasslands). He has made fundamental advances in showing how they have evolved and are sculpted and maintained by processes such as fire and herbivory, and in showing how they are changing under pressures of anthropogenic change. He has revolutionised understanding of global biogeography by showing how animals and fire interact with climate to shape the distribution and structure of terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. This has major policy implications in showing how naturally open ecosystems can be damaged by excessive focus on reforestation. |
