Citation | Goswami has made fundamental contributions to understanding how individual differences in children's 'phonological awareness' (of word sound structure) underpin reading development and dyslexia across languages. She identified a novel sensory cause of impaired phonological processing in dyslexia based on amplitude modulation (AM) discrimination, and showed experimentally that sensitivity to speech AM structure governs individual differences in phonological development for children and infants. She pioneered neuroimaging studies of oscillatory speech encoding of AMs by children, identifying a core neural AM encoding impairment in dyslexia. This research is enabling her to develop listening technologies that could eventually prevent dyslexia. Her research spans from neuron to classroom, providing a causal description of language impairment at sensory, neural and cognitive levels in all languages. |
