Citation | Professor Karen Heywood is an internationally recognised observational physical oceanographer. She uses remote sensing and autonomous gliders to study physical processes in the oceans and has used them to make important discoveries about how Antarctic Bottom Water is formed and its pathways of export to the rest of the oceans, as well as its impact on global climate. She was the first to show the crucial roles that Antarctic slope currents play in heat transfer to ice shelves, in krill ecology and in bottom water formation. Her work is innovative and has led to novel insights into how the earth system operates. |
