Citation | Richard Horne is one of the world's leading experts in the wave-particle interactions involved in both the production and loss of highly energetic particles in the magnetospheres of Earth, Jupiter and Saturn. His work has shown how wave acceleration is a major process that forms the Earth's radiation belts and has changed long-held ideas going back 40 years or more. Moreover, that similar wave acceleration processes operate at Jupiter and Saturn leading to a fundamental revision of planetary radiation belt formation. He has developed an operational forecast model that includes these processes and which is used by the European Space Agency to maintain safe and reliable satellite operations during severe space weather events. |
