Date | 21 April 2021 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Gregory Houseman as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Greg Houseman has made profound contributions to the study of dynamics of Earth's mantle and lithosphere. He combines a deep understanding of fluid dynamics with both analytical and advanced computational techniques in simple and transparent dynamical models which have had a major impact on our understanding of tectonics. His elegant numerical experiments elucidated the dynamics of distributed deformation in both continental and oceanic lithosphere. His seminal analysis of convective instability of the lower lithosphere revolutionized our understanding of the growth of mountain belts. He has also designed and led several multinational seismological experiments to test these theories. |
