Citation | Rebecca Kilner is an evolutionary biologist who has discovered novel ways in which social behaviour drives evolutionary change. She used elegant cross-fostering experiments in birds and insects to expose how family members exert selection on each other, and discovered hidden evolutionary conflicts between parents and their offspring, and among adults caring together for offspring. By setting up experimental beetle populations to evolve in different social environments, she demonstrated that parents and offspring co-adapt to one other. Her experimental work on bird families showed that co-adapted traits in parents and their young conceal the evolutionary conflict between them. |
