Citation | Stanley Whittingham's scientific career has been focused on materials for energy-related applications, and in particular for electrochemical energy storage. He discovered that intercalation reactions could be the basis for high energy density lithium batteries. From an idea in 1972 they have dominated battery storage and have enabled the development of long-range electric cars and the storage of energy from renewable sources. Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionised our lives since they entered the market in 1991, as they have laid the foundation of a fossil fuel-free society. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2019, which he shared with Goodenough and Yoshino was awarded for the development of the lithium-ion battery. |
