TitleConti, Elena: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date21 April 2021
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Elena Conti as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Foreign Member and citation giving the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationElena Conti is an outstanding structural biologist who heads the department of Structural Cell Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich. Her work has dramatically enhanced mechanistic understanding of nuclear-cytoplasmic transport, nuclear RNA surveillance, cytoplasmic mRNA turnover, and inter-connections between these crucial processes. Perhaps her most significant body of work has been determining how RNAs are degraded in the 3'-5' direction by the multiprotein RNA exosome complex, which plays key roles in RNA processing in all eukaryotes, including humans. The insights obtained have underpinned functional analyses by many other groups and greatly stimulated research in the field.
