TitleRizzolatti, Giacomo: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date21 April 2021
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Giacomo Rizzolatti as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Foreign Member and citation giving the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationProfessor Rizzolatti is one of the world's most eminent neurophysiologists. His work has concentrated on the parietal and premotor mechanisms that support the selection of actions. He is particularly noted for discovering neurones that modify their activity whether an individual performs a particular action or sees another performing that same action. These have been called ‘mirror neurones'. This discovery has shown how we are able to understand the actions of others and how we can interpret their emotions, and it has also suggested a way in which language may have evolved.Professor Rizzolatti is one of the world's most eminent neurophysiologists.
